Environmental Protection

The Stevin Rock Quarry in Khor Khwair is located within the Khor Khwair Industrial Zone, which was specifically set aside by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah for the quarrying and manufacturing industries. Stevin Rock Quarries in Al Ghail and Kadra are also set with due consideration to the environment.

The following steps have been taken to ensure that quarries are operated in an environmentally friendly manner:

  1. All new Drilling Rigs are equipped with compressed air operated cyclone type dust collectors.

  2. The frequency of blasting has been rationalised and reduced.

  3. All blasts are monitored by a seismograph to ensure blasting vibration and air over pressure is within international standards.

  4. The number of Access Roads in use by quarry equipment and personnel has been rationalised and reduced.

  5. All Roadways are regularly graded and maintained to reduce the amount of dust on the surface.

  6. All Roadways and Working Areas are regularly sprayed. Four water trucks are reserved for this purpose.

  7. The Crushing Plants have been fitted with Water Spray Suppression Systems and Dust collection units.

  8. The Aggregate Storage Silos have been enclosed to prevent dust escaping during production.

  9. Screens and Conveyors in the Crushing Plant have been covered and/or enclosed, where possible, to prevent dusts escaping.

  10. Chutes have been placed on the discharge ends of the Scalping Conveyor to control the free fall of material, and prevent dust from escaping.

  11. Stevin Rock water trucks and road sweepers regularly spray and sweep the access roads in Al Ghail and Kadra Quarries.

  12. A tree planting schedule is underway at both Al Gail and Kadra.

  13. The Environment committee receive a monthly update and program report with regard to the ongoing dust control program at Kadra.
